long time no updatie - September 17, 2008

Howdy. As I recently bought a grand old lady to fix up, I have been covered in sawdust, jackhammer grease and significant amounts of sweat for the past half-year…that should explain my lack of updates. Still, here’s a quick rundown…

-My lovely friend, possum band mate, running and biking partner and phone call keep in toucher friend JoJo Rozler, who played on my Gift Songs from A Lovely Puzzling Sea double disc set, is being inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame this year. Congrats Jojo, we all love you. Joe is incredible at everything…recently wrapping up work on the European Manowar tour and a Fisher Price toy gig. Versatile!

-“Mixer”, my painting of a bear struggling with his place I the food chain is being auctioned off at the Burchfield Penney’s Gala, “Fruition”. I was on the education committee for the new museum and am very excited to see it open and thrive.

-Congrats to my pals in "Here Come The Comets" who took home awards for best recording and best group on this years Buffalo Spree awards. Three of my paintings graced the cover, one of which is owned by super designer-Grammy winner Brian Grunert, known for his stellar work with Ani Difranco among many lucky others.

-Saturday Soul Jazz Matinees will begin its third season in November at the Sportsmans Tavern…that’s me, Ronnie Davis and Doug Morgano every Saturday from 3-6 with a different special guest each week.

-I played drums on Rockabilly Hall of Famer Ed Bently’s latest record, ex-current 10,000 maniacs John and Mary’s latest “Peace Bridge”, Dave Ruch's "The Oldest Was Born First", the amazing Hussalonia’s "Live at Allen Hall" (free download at hussalonia.com) and am looking forward to work on musician/entrepreneur Rick Smith’s latest.

-The leaves are changing…it’s time to turn our thoughts to the turkey trot (who will trot with me?) and Jonathan Hughes's Yearly Christmas Record Extreme.

-Bluegrass Thursdays 9:30-12:30 continue at Allen St. Hardware…we are going on three years now…come on down and listen or sit in!

-This past August I was tour manager for the very successful east coast tour of Tokyo Japan's The Silver Beats...let me tell you what a great bunch of musicians and people they are. I miss them already.

big sheeooow... - May 3, 2008

...at the tralf, may 23rd, 8pm.
rob lynch and the adjustable friends, bob fera, and the mighty corrections.
the tralf is a beautiful concert space, not a smelly dive, so if that kind to cleanliness suits you...well then get on board and buy a ticket! 10 dollars from me or 12 at the door.

ye old band... - March 21, 2008

here's a blast from the past from 10 years ago about my old band...
The award-winning Buffalo band Plaster Sandals is set to play a series of big-city concerts in the coming weeks. The band is scheduled to play at the Mercury Lounge in New York City on Saturday. It is slated to make its Cleveland debut on Friday at Peabody's, where it will play with Way Cool and MCA's The Clarks. The show is scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m. The band plans to return to the area on May 17 for an afternoon show at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, outside of Buffalo...

spring - March 20, 2008

my dear friends...
i wanted to say hi and let you know what i've been up to, so you're not worried if i miss curfew. just to be courteous.
so...

rob lynch and the adjustable friends are playing a full band show, my first ever! it's been a fun experience hearing my merry friends interpret my solitary rock from my three albums. im also playing with the fantastically folky john and mary. its a pretty amazing party, i recommend coming. and the website is hillarious.

http://www.trimania.com/

if your curious about said solitary rock, the first two double albums are on itunes, just search for rob lynch. welcome to sound is playful and experimental, gift songs is dark and lonesome.

my paintings have stories to tell. i've decided to start posting them here if your curious:

http://welcometosound.wordpress.com/

speaking of which, i'm happy to say that from the over the last two years i've had four solo art shows, betty's, music is art (a few booths down from my dear friend mark freeland), the castellani museum and the wellsville creative arts center. all went well and lots of paintings were sold. but there are still a bunch left for the rust belt price of $250, payable in installments. want one? think someone would? i've posted them here for the lookin.

big bowling, records, awards... - November 3, 2007

hey hey! blue skies, crisp air, what could be better?

I'll tell you what...how bout some sweet, sweet photos from the irving klaws halloween party at mohawk place. if you missed it, it was a "big lebowski" themed event...classic cohen brothers...bowling glory...required viewing in my book.

autobahn opened the show. yes, you remember autobahn (?!), the keyboard playing, chocolate loving, low light requiring, efficient trio of german nihilists modeled after kraftwerk. and who better to play the keyboard role than myself, jonathan hughes and kent weber. we turned off the stage lights, strapped flashlights to our hands and feet and we went space sound/europop/culinary/d minor crazy. actually, there was minimal stage movement. those nihilists dont dance much.
you may agree that my wig makes me look like some mash up of handsome tails bass player dave hill and talk legend phil donahue. but phil would never be caught with a microkorg.

http://mrbuilding.multiply.com/photos/album/25

in non keyboard news, im pleased to have been nominated for "best blues drummer" and "best original band" (with john and mary and the valkyries) in the buffalo music awards. care to vote for your favorite buffalo musicians? please do!

http://bestofwny.com/bma/index.php?sid=2&newtest=Y

today from 3-6, my weekly gig at sportsmans tavern continues. the saturday "skinny tie" soul jazz matinee will feature the talented mrs. sue kincaid as our special guest...ronnie davis will also celebrate the release of his excellent new record, "soul jazz midnight"!

after the show, i'm making a beeline for the blue lantern cafe in elma for a show with john brady and jim whitford, 8-12. a well designed relaxing place for a martini and/or late dinner...

BIG NEWS! on monday i hope to put the finishing touches on a project at least five years in the making...a new 15 song cd called "duets". its a collection of recordings i've made with friends...very lighthearted, sloppy, funny, full of carelessly placed microphones and the aura of labatt and buzzys pizza...all in the spirit of "come on over and lets press record". it really is a celebration of friendship, featuring songs and performances (usually on instruments we don't know how to play) from lifelong pals jim zito, chris cannon, alison pipitone, sue bocek, jonathan hughes, mike morrissey, bob hanley, mike meldrum, rex hobart and jojo rozler. i'm dedicating the disc to my good friend mark freeland. mark and i had talked for years about making a song or two for this project but sadly we never got around to it...the album opener "body party" co-written with jim zito would have pleased him greatly. it is almost as ridiculous as "alien on my jacket". "duets" will be the first of many volumes...come on over and make up some songs with me.

remember to pencil in my xmas party on friday, dec 21st...

1970s am gold,
rob

goat and woodblock - October 8, 2007

my new art show, the ridiculously titled "goat and woodblock" opened last friday at the wellsville creative arts center in wellsville, ny. the place is amazing. the drive was amazing. the weather, well. hot.

single jingle - July 30, 2007

summer. my garden is full of things i'm not sure i planted. and basil, lots of basil. and raspberries (go all the way) that wont quit. squash too. yelloooo. huge.

thanks to Laura Sargent from buffalorising.com who put together this nice article and slideshow about me.

http://buffalorising.com/story/artists_among_us_rob_lynch#entry

i'm happy to be SECOND best instrumentalist (damn you, handsome david moore!) in the Buffalo Spree Magazine Best of WNY 2007. Thank you to the powers that be. im honored and flattered.

http://www.buffalospree.com/spree/index.html

in other news, the new John and Mary & the Valkyries record “PeaceBridge” has just been released!
We all remember John and Mary of the 10,000 maniacs, huge in Brazil and all that. in fact i'm hoping we'll be going to Brazil to support the record.
Its a typical buffalo affair, with all of the great players we know and love helping out. I play drums on a tune most of the disc...one tune has percussion by the wonderfully unique Victor DeLorenzo of the Violent Femms. I think that after “wipeout” and “in the air tonight”, victor penned one of the most recognizable drum fills of all time on the college bar favorite “blister in the sun”.
tblah tblah! tblah tblah!

listen to samples and buy one here if you would like to:
http://www.myspace.com/johnmaryandthevalkyries

There is also an acoustic blues record just out by the always soulful John Brady...big jimmy whitford played bass...i played tubs.
it's so new i haven't even heard it yet! more on that after i get a copy!

theres lots going on...i haven't been updating the gigs section for a while now...why not? not sure. too many gigs. bluegrass continues every thursday night at allen st. hardware. stop down while the summer still allows for it. we've got a month of Doug Yeomans left before he hits the road with a johnny cash musical...for a year!

good ol' Rex Hobart is coming to town august 26th at sportsmans...i'll be on drums. getting the band back together!

http://www.rexhobart.com/

my art show is still up at the castellani museum. that ends on september 16th. the paintings are all for sale for the value price of $250. value! take one home so i don't have to!

and although it may be a little odd, i'd like to finish by saying thank you to my dear friend mark freeland who passed away a month ago. i love ya pal and will always smile about the amazing rock shows we did together. i've never had more fun making music. hopefully we'll get some of those up on youtube...there's a near decade worth videos in a big old box...

good night. cool down.

banger ending - June 14, 2007

...so it goes. I love ya markie, rest in peace my dear friend.

blackberry brandy, from the great land of the Poles - January 9, 2007

I always start my mornings with music…speakers in the shower and all. Lately I’ve been hearing Frank Black sing, “I’m not dead, I’m in Pittsburgh”…because he is excellent.

My new record, “gift songs from a lovely, puzzling sea” had been making listeners happy and nervous for a few weeks now, but if you don’t have a copy, it’s online at:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/lynch2

buy one and enjoy the little stickers that are hidden in each double disc!

I played a very fun gig with Doug Yeomans at a place called the Wellsville Creative Arts Center…150 people bought tickets and were the best audience I’ve played for in years. Here’s a little clip of us doing a sleepy encore, “sleepwalk”.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=koUkgDdad5c

I’m painting for my show coming up at the Castellani Art Museum in March…wish me creativity and stamina! Love, robbie

rare solo show - November 28, 2006

The Public Domain EP - November 19, 2006

Good Friends...I played drums recently on a fun project that you might enjoy.

It was crafted by Jesse Mank, under the theatrical name “Hussalonia”. Jesse is one incredible fellow with two far-fetched ears. He calls his singing “cartoonish”…it reminds me of a mix between Buddy Holly and Elvis Costello…his songs are always melodic and catchy...always toying around with the pop music, twisting it this way and that…keeping things conceptually/melodically interesting. I’m a big fan.

So do yourself a favor and download his new “Public Domain EP”. I ask you to do so not as an advertisement, but because I think the songs are cool and thought you might too.

It’s as free as the name implies, and because Jesse is always the clever one, it comes with a keen printable case and song book! Top that, Mr. Bill I Tunes.

A word from Jess about the project:

“United States Copyright Law states that the work of Hussalonia founder Jesse Mank will fall into the public domain 70 years after his death.

Mr. Mank does not want you to wait that long.”

Right on!

Here’s the link:

http://www.hussalonia.com/6106.html

Make sure you check out the rest of his site…very entertaining.

While we’re at it…
Will i see you at:

a) My solo show at the CPG, 9pm Dec 2nd w Gregory Paul and the Corrections
b) My Xmas Party Friday Dec 22
c) Solo Painting Show at the Castellani Museum, May-Sept 2007

Must we wait that long?
